Why Pretty Good Dating Will Be Different

· 2 min read

I'm not a company. I'm one pissed off programmer.

That's the difference.

No Investors

I don't have investors breathing down my neck asking about "user engagement metrics" or "time spent in app." Nobody is pressuring me to keep you swiping longer so we can show more ads.

There's no Series A funding that needs to 10x. No board meetings where someone asks how we can monetize loneliness more efficiently.

No Shareholders

Match Group—the company that owns Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, and basically every other dating app—is a publicly traded company. They have a legal obligation to maximize shareholder value.

You know what maximizes shareholder value? Keeping you single and swiping.

I don't have shareholders. I have a laptop and a grudge against dating apps.

No Quotas

I don't have growth targets. I don't need to hit 10 million users by Q3. I don't need to show hockey-stick growth to raise my next round.

I just need to build something that works well enough that people actually find someone and tell their friends about it.

One Guy Who Gets It

I've been on the apps. I've had the experience of swiping for months and getting nothing. I know what it feels like to wonder if your profile is even being shown to anyone.

I'm building the dating site I wish existed—because I need it too.

The Incentives Are Different

Here's the thing about incentives: they shape everything.

When a company's incentive is to keep you on the platform as long as possible, they build features that keep you on the platform as long as possible. Endless swiping. Algorithmic manipulation. Shadow bans that make you think you need to pay for premium.

My incentive? I want this to work so well that people find someone, leave, and tell everyone they know about it. Word of mouth is my only marketing budget.

That's a completely different incentive structure. And it leads to completely different design decisions.

This Is What "Different" Looks Like

No swiping. No algorithm. No shadow bans. No premium tier that actually makes the free tier worse. No tricks.

Just a simple website where you can search for what you're looking for and find it.

That's it. That's the whole pitch.
